  • Alumnus = singular male graduate  [uh-luhm-nuhs]

    Edith MacConnel Hickok was the mother of the first Alpha Gam baby.

    The pearl was officially adopted as the Fraternity jewel in 1961.

    In 1909, Founder Mary Louise Snider became a missionary with the Methodist Church at Concepcion College, Concepcion, Chile, spending 13 years teaching there and in Santiago! Mary Louise originated and helped organize the first summer institute of Epworth Leagues in South America. She also cared for several of the native young women, and eventually adopted one as her daughter.

    Greek-letter societies began in 1776 with Phi Beta Kappa, an organization now honoring high scholarship and character. Phi Beta Kappa is considered to be the foundation of the fraternity system today, founded December 5, 1776, at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.

    The first International Headquarters (Central Office at the time) was established in 1927 in the home of Louise Leonard, Grand President from 1917-1929.

    Alpha Chapter-Syracuse University hosted the second Convention on April 23rd at their chapter home. During this two day gathering, Jennie Titus Smith was unanimously re-elected Grand President (now International President) and Alpha Chapter was tasked with creating an Alpha Gamma Delta Quarterly for the next two years!

    April is NPC's (National Panhellenic Conference) Advisor Appreciation Month.

    On May 10, 1904, Jennie Titus Smith Morris joined Marguerite Shepard, Estelle Shepard Beswick and Georgia Alberta Dickover for the second meeting of what would become Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity in just a few weeks. During this meeting, Dr. Coddington explained the two possible methods of organization: the group could join an existing Greek organization or become the first chapter of a new national fraternity.

    The first National Convention was held at the Alpha house in 1907.  The total cost for hosting Convention was $99.44.

    Karen Lutz | Karen Lutz has written screenplays for such movies as 10 Things I Hate About You and Legally Blonde. Karen thought back to her days in the Alpha Gam house while writing the Legally Blonde script - she used some of her personal experiences in the movie!


    Margaret Moffat Toy | Alpha Epsilon | Margaret Moffat Toy motivated the world when she created the "Meals on Wheels" program to aid the sick and elderly.

    Amber Brkich | Alpha Epsilon | Amber Brkich was selected as a contestant on the hit TV reality series "Survivor 2: The Outback". When she was invited back to "Survivor: All Stars", she won the million dollar grand prize. She has since married "Boston Rob", her adversary on "Survivor: All Stars", and the two came in second on the seventh season of "The Amazing Race".

    Aslihan Koruyan | Epsilon Rho | Aslihan Koruyan was selected as Miss Turkey 1991 and triumphed to the Semi-Finalist round of the Miss World pageant. She also models for Pantene Hair Products.

    Shelley Winnaman | Delta Alpha | Shelley Winnaman holds the nickname of "The Body of Hollywood". She doubled for Julia Roberts in the movie and printed advertising of "Pretty Woman". She has doubled for countless other stars including Kim Basinger and Sandra Bullock.

    Gloria Loring | Delta Alpha | Gloria Loring portrayed Liz Chandler on popular daytime soap opera “Days of Our Lives”. She was also a singer, songwriter and author.

    Barbara Jo Walker Hummel | Gamma Zeta | Barbara Jo Hummel was Miss America 1947, by way of Miss Memphis. She was the last Miss America to be crowned in her bathing suit; all since 1947 have been crowned in their evening gowns.

    Ellen Janeway Brothers | Sigma | President of American Girl and the Executive Vice President of Mattel

    Mignon Good Eberhart | Beta Alpha | Author of 59 mysteries, the last published in 1988, shortly before her 89th birthday and known as the American "Agatha Christie". Eight of her novels were adapted as movies.

    Maria Maunder | Zeta Chi | 1996 Olympic Silver Medallist on Canadian Women’s Crew Team

    Emily Helen Butterfield | Alpha | Emily Butterfield, one of our founders, has exhibits in the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame, architect (designed blue prints for the Alpha chapter house)
